4C the Power is extremely grateful to East Villagers and the EV Thanksgiving Points Challenge.  We are the second place winners and will be awarded $1500.  There are so many wonderful things that come out of participating in this challenge besides the money award that I wanted to share.

The 4C the Power interns were really responsible for coming together to join East Villagers and  spread the word about 4C the Power and how we build communities through working with youth in the Arts.  There were 17 interns who basically worked diligently to upload pictures, write stories and blogs, and share their experiences about their work in 4C the Power.  This challenge showed me even more how dedicated they are to the mission and vision of 4C the Power.

Another wonderful thing occured and that was meeting and getting to know the East Villager family.  All of the organizations and people involved in building communities just like us but in a different way was both inspiring and moving.  EV has opened our hearts even more to so many other ways in which we can help.

That brings me to the third awesome thing that happened as a result of the EV challenge.   We became more and more in love with the children who wrote blogs which then created a greater connection to the Red Scarf Project.  4C the Power has selected this project along with Autisim to be our secondary focus for 2010.  Of course our primary focus is continuing with our free or low cost workshops for youth!

Lastly, the monetary prize will be used to pay for students to attend the 4C the Power workshops for free and to supplement the donated school supplies to be sent to China for the Red Scarf Project children.

Again, we are so grateful to EV and I am so grateful for the the people I have working with me for 4C the Power!

There workshops for youth and an all day event that provided food, community building and a show. The artist that performed in the show and also lead workshops for students were; The Gamblerz Crew of South Korea, Kaba Modern, Vudoo Soul, IZ, Seriously, Clara Chung, Shinobi Studios, and DJ NIck. Student were able to create projects in dance, bboying/bgirling, rap, spoken word, singing, composition, photography, and DJing. The testimonial from the students tells it all!

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season and a time for reflection rather than shopping for me.  Especially having been introduced to so many worthy organizations we can support here on East Villagers.

When I met with Nancy, and Mr. and Mrs. Chao, the stories they  told me about their travels and in particular the Red Scarf Project was both moving and inspirational.  At this Thanksgiving dinner, I will be asking that as a family instead of exchanging Christmas gifts, we instead donate to an organzation that can use the donation to save or enhance lives.  I honestly don't need anymore clothes, gadgets, or perfume. Actually I don't need anything because I am blessed to have a place warm and safe place to live, food to eat, medical care and so much more.

I am thankful for the many blessings in my life.  What are you thankful for this year?

For my brother, David Watanabe who is playing his guitar in heaven now....

He was destined, and determined and a warrior in life

No matter his path he paved it with the strumming guitar he craved

The strumming may have only been in his head especially during the confines of getting ahead.

Even when shackled by the pressures of the mainstream, the elders, the status quo

He still carried the melodies of possibility deep within his soul, his old soul

He could be a jerk and a joker and he loved to fish and play poker

Hiding his pain behind harsh words, a naughty laugh that could give you a rush, a straight flush

Did he hide the pain too deep?  Why didn't he just let it go and weep?

Could the wound deep within his heart create the cancer that eventually tore us all apart?

He always carried the melodies of possibility deep with his soul, his old soul

He was sensitive and intelligent and articulate beyond words

Working in a business world fill with meetings, greetings, and monotony

Bound by suits and ties and black leather shoes, really, what was the commodity?

Did the boredom seep into his heart and create the illness that tore us apart?

He always carried the melodies of possibility deep with his soul, his old soul

He was hopeful and brave and a fighter to the end

Enduring pain beyond what any bureaucracy could bring

His beloved angel, Bren, there throughout his triumphs, struggles, his Zen

She helped him see what could be, where to go, how to heal what took a toll

He always carried the melodies of possibility deep with his soul, his old soul.

He is missed, and he motivates because he is always on our minds

Now he helps us see what can be, where to go and how to heal our soul

As we struggle to balance the responsibilities of life it's the music from his guitar that relieves our strife

He is the complex concerto singing in our hearts helping us forget we are apart

We carry the melodies of possibility deep within our souls, our old souls, and his old soul

For my grandfather, Kanichi Uyemoto:

This journey began over 80 years ago when a young man fell in love for the very first time

He was on a ship headed to America when that lady love threw him a life line.

He jumped from that ship and swam to line

From that lady holding the torch against the New York Skyline

She was holding a torch high into the sky calling to him, so it seemed, to begin chasing the dream

The torch bearing lady bid the man farewell

As he climbed out of the water and into the kitchen of hell

Didn't know anyone, couldn't talk to anyone, didn't know his way around

Searched for someone who talked like him, looked like him, so he wouldn't have sleep on the ground.

His hunger and pain was about to change his way,
his determination and integrity reminded him not to go astray

The light of the future was calling to him, so it seemed, to begin chasing the dream.

The light that was calling shone from the eyes of a cook

Who had once been in the shoes of the man with the desperate look

Chop suey was the menu, washing dishes was the job

The man was grateful for the food, the shelter and that he didn't have to rob

Two different cultures came together as one helping each other to prepare for the chase,

Knowing that alone it would have been in haste

He worked and he saved, and he saved and worked with the help from the cook he was blessed

This was how he could begin his journey out to the west.

The story is unclear as to how he made it across the states

We know he got here because California has become our family's fate.

The golden state was calling to him, so it seemed, to begin chasing the dream

He traveled up and down the state of gold picking the fruit, hoeing the weeds

Packing the vegetables for the city people to eat.

The hard work paid off and he settled in the north

On a peach orchard filled with a beautiful fragrance the blossoms brought forth.

As he strived to grow the most delicious peach

The longing for family became a constant reminder of what was out of his reach

The elders of this quaint little pioneer town

Told the matchmakers to contact the homeland for a woman renown

It was through this method the man and the woman were married

The ceremony happening through a pigeon that carried

His new wife was calling to him, so it seemed, to begin chasing the dream

This contract marriage based on tradition and not love

Was the beginning of a legacy that could have only been destined from above

The loneliness appeased, the warmth of a cooking stove, the love began to grow

The man and the woman had eight little darlings six of them girls with two boys in tow

The man and the woman came together as one helping each to continue the chase

Knowing that alone it would have been in haste

It was during this time between child number four and child number five

This family would be sent to a camp as ordered by Roosevelt as history described

One suitcase, nothing from a country past, only what you could carry, 24 hours to prepare

The man and his family threw the heirlooms down a well, watching their heritage disappear in despair

The hypocrisy of the land of the free was calling to him, so it seemed, to begin chasing the dream

After their internment in that camp in Amache, they returned to their home in the quaint little town

Found their house a wreck and full of garbage, hatred, scorn and prejudice abound.

The only welcome they received was from the peach trees and their familiar fragrance

Of the twinkling blossoms signifying a new crops emergence

The family worked and saved and saved and worked with the help from Mother Nature they were blessed

They bought another piece of land, built a home with a pond and yet the man and his wife still didn't rest

The man became blinded by a disease of the eyes so the wife took over and lead the charge

The wife with the man always at her side developed the farm that became a thousand acres large

Providing the opportunity for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to succeed

Each of them having the determination and integrity from the man that embarked on this journey to be freed

The chase of the dream was calling to him, so it seemed,

Yet the heart and soul of the man revealed the importance of embracing the chase and honoring the dream

I honor the man and his wife who made it possible for me

To embrace my own journey and the strength to fight to be free

I am a Japanese girl, my skin as light as a Mikimoto pearl

I am demure and soft spoken; I defer and play the token

I walk five paces behind the man that I married over the threshold I carried

I never speak before spoken to, I will always agree with your point of view

I arrange flowers in the style of ikebana, flower in Japanese is hana

I dance to the beat of a taiko drum, beneath the trees of the cherry blossom

I didn't need college; working in the home is the only knowledge

I am good at mathematics; I can calculate your share of the bill no matter the antics

I always have my camera for pictures; I also go to the booths to take picture stickers

I am a terrible driver wearing glasses as thick as the mask of a scuba diver

I can slice up a fish to make a tasty raw dish

I fold colorful paper into origami; I sleep every night on a tatami

I am a Japanese girl, my skin as light as a Mikimoto pearl

I am demure and soft spoken; I defer and play the token

I walk five paces behind the man that I married over the threshold I carried

I never speak before spoken to, I will always agree with your point of view

Wait a minute, hold the show, who is spouting this flow

Did you bump your head on the way to work, did you buy crack from the mini mart clerk

What Japanese girl are you talking about; it's not me no way no doubt

Take a better look and listen to me, I am a Japanese girl but I've broken free

I am a Japanese girl, my skin like a Starbuck's latte with a caramel swirl

I am outgoing and out spoken, I lead by example and refuse to be a token

I am an equal partner with the man I married, he is confident and will not be harried

I speak when I have a point to make, I won't always agree and act a fake

I like flowers from beyond our border; I can't arrange a sandwich in the right order

I dance to the beats of Far*eAst Movement, beneath the neon signs of a good old boy establishment

I graduated from college with a BS and masters; I want to help others achieve their dreams faster

I cannot stand mathematics; I failed it and flunked it with flair and dramatics

I can never find my camera damn it,   you can take those sticker pictures and cram it

I have a big white Sequoia I pilot; I four wheel up the mountain to catch some ultraviolet

I can't stand anything raw it makes me want to puke; anything I slice up will have to be nuked

I can fold my poker hand once I've seen the river, I like to sleep where room service is delivered

Wait a minute, hold the show, who is spouting this flow

Did you bump your head on the way to work, did you buy crack from the mini mart clerk

What Japanese girl are you talking about; yeah that's me, absolutely, no doubt

It's not that I don't honor the past; I just want you to understand the contrast

I am a Japanese girl.......................

Have you thought about what matters to you

Do you have a purpose, live by a golden rule

Does your journey have meaning, are you still dreaming

What is your passion, is it only about the cash in

Without passion and purpose in mind

Your path will be rocky and fulfillment hard to find

Is it discovery of a wrong that should be right

Do you need to take on a community fight

When someone makes a joke about a culture

Do you stay silent, get angry, try to nurture

When you witness someone being oppressed

Do you do something about it, do you shutdown, get depressed

Have you thought about society and where it is heading

Are you active and involved so there'll be no regretting

Are you ready to commit and take a risk

Where is the courage to take responsibility and get some people pissed

What does it look like to walk the talk

How will you deal when some will balk

Is your way of being based on the inside-out

Does your inside match your outside no matter who says you count

You can do it for the sake of society

Justice for humanity will be your sobriety

Just begin with what's inside of you

Understand and appreciate others point of view

Have you thought about what matters to you

Do you have a purpose, live by a golden rule

Does your journey bring satisfaction, have you declared your passion

Are you ready to take on the challenge of transformation

hese are the critical and important questions I ask myself and now want to hear what you think:

Why are double eyelids so desired but double chins are are not?

Why is it my mom will just get done eating one meal and she's already thinking about the next?

Why do I find myself saying to my kids, "use your coconut" and hear my dad in my head when he used to say that to me?

Why is it whenever someone cuts me off on the freeway, I think of my brother who used to go crazy, thus how I learned the word motherf**er at a very young age.

How did my grandmother make me think I was the most special granddaughter in the world yet all the other 17 grandchildren feel they were the special one?  Smart old lady!

How did my blind grandfather always manage to chase me down and wiggle my kneecaps and elbows making me laugh and then cry….

What was God thinking when he decided that Asians would turn bright red when they drink alcohol?

Might as well be a walking a neon sign that says use me, lose me, confuse me, incite me, fight me, spite me

That's why it was better to smoke weed.  Not that I would know about that…….

Why does everyone with straight hair want curly hair and everyone with curly hair want straight hair?

Why is the talk always about Asian woman with no asses when I see plenty of Asian men without a booty?

Is that why they try to overcompensate with greenback booty or fancy car booty?

I don't even want to think about what's holding up some you guy's pants right now

Is it really necessary that I have a purse that costs as much as it would to feed an entire village in the mountains of Thailand for a year?

Why is it that for a long as I can remember people stare at me wondering who I am when I walk into any kind of Asian event?  Obon, Chinese New Year, Hmong festival…whatever ……

Are these occasions to celebrate the different cultures or to cash in.  I mean how can there be three different Hmong New Year's day?  I can go to an Obon festival beginning in June every weekend for two months.

Well at least at the Hmong festivals I feel like Yao Ming

Why did my dad, a Hawaiian born Japanese, use the term "throw out instead of "throw up"?

Why did whatever my grandfather ate on top of his bowl of rice looks so damn good.  He could be eating fish cheeks and some of that natto stuff, licking and smacking and slurping.  I try it and I would want to "throw out".

Why is it I have to be the one to teach people how to use chopsticks at a dinner party?

My dad would be laughing his ass off right now (wait a minute he didn't have one) because he use to hit me in the arm because I couldn't use them the right way

Why do people always come to me with their problems?

Last time I looked, my business card does not say, Confucius, Buddha or Yoda after my name

Why does my mom or grandma's home have a distinct smell?  Not good or bad just a very nostalgic and comforting smell

No potpourri or scented candles burning, just the smell of  fish, shoyu, sake, ginger, garlic, chlorox  and a dash of incense.

Don't you think Asian geeks are the best?

I married one, he even wore a calculator on his belt the first time I saw him.  There we were in the student union,  I didn't know if he would understand me if I said something to him because he surely wasn't  born in the US wearing the TI 55 strapped to his belt which was holding up his pants because….. of course……… he has no ass

Why are we indignant about another ethnicity or culture thinking they are better than us, yet within the Asian community that same thinking is going on?  Koreans people are this Chinese are that, Japanese people have this, Vietnamese have that.

If some of my questions are some of your questions and some my answers are some of your answers, then that's the commonality we build upon so that we have the courage and love in hearts to accept and celebrate our differences.

Always thought I was open-minded
When it came to MySpace I was blinded
Told my peeps it was full of nasties chasing skirt
But the love of music from my brothers and sisters made me a convert

Found Far*eAst Movement, Ken Oak Band and Heather Park
Started to groove to their sound, added them as friends on a lark
Had to spread the word about their unique blends
The Internet became the mode to promote them

A bulletin told us KOB would be playing by the beach
Off to Santa Monica, excited their melodies within reach
North on the 405 leaving the silicon and botox of OC
West on the 10 to the den of a blend of genuine people potpourri

At the Promenade, the mix of cello and guitar are the star
Ken and Ed seem kind of shy or maybe just want to keep us afar
No matter if they hold us at bay
The beauty of their music will get us to stay

The slide of the bow and the strum of the guitar actually became our caress
The street dancer and the Japanese girl named Shika were there before us
The haunting cadence and staccato of "Slow Dance" had us rapt
We missed summer's Kiss because the damn So Cal traffic had us trapped

When they saw our response they started to smile
Maybe it was the street dancer or Brenda who was making it worthwhile
But when the set ended and they were getting ready to leave
Talked to us genuinely, took pictures and signed our cd's

So If I hadn't started a MySpace page
I would have been imprisoned in a concrete cage
Santa Monica, Korea, LA, Japan and New York
These are the myspace places I have called a port

Kev, Jae and James are the next to send us a bulletin
We'll head down 99, sipping some wine, over the Grapevine until we find
"The Good Stuff", because it's "All About Me", until then we won't "Smile"
Just "throw your hands in the air til you touch the clouds", that's their style

Always thought I was open-minded
When it came to MySpace I was blinded
My world has been expanded to include some new friends
The love of lyrics, melodies and beats the common lens

Clarity has been elusive as integrity has been questioned
The system is out or order but the orders keep on coming
Authenticity has been replaced with acquiescence to the status quo
The soldiers are becoming weary as the generals build their power

Deceit is perpetuated while honesty is ridiculed
Caste systems are present and equity is lip service
Gender is a tiebreaker; the tie always goes to the winner
The winner is decided by who has the power

Focus has been disrupted so chaos can reign
Chaos is the security blanket for mediocrity
Change has been avoided; heads are buried deeper in the sand
The sand is becoming cluttered with heads

Vulnerability is kindness; kindness is mistaken for weakness
Risk is reckless or is risk courageous
Courageousness is applauded; if permission is given to clap
The clapping is drowning out the sounds of sobbing

Hypocrisy is the norm; the norming is hypocritical
Visionaries are tolerated until they are deemed insane
Historians are revered for they way they rewrite history
The rewrite of history is also called past practice which really means it all continues……..

Bumping her, bumping her, bumping her head against a glass ceiling in the sky
Breaking through, breaking through, breaking through trying to undo the image of a Karate kicking angel and Lucy Liu

Shimmering ice, shimmering ice, shimmering ice and sacrifice in order to win the gold

Through the hoop, through the hoop, through the hoop she jumped but where are the endorsements Kristy Yamaguchi should recoup

Laughing hard, laughing hard, laughing hard when she portrays her mom while making funny faces

Mainstream elusive, mainstream elusive, mainstream elusive to her so how does Margaret Cho gain access to the entertainment club exclusive

Swinging driver, swinging driver, swinging driver of a prodigy scorned because she was not the norm

Confidence broken, confidence broken, confidence broken can Michelle Wie overcome the barriers unspoken

Stereotyping her, stereotyping her, stereotyping her will not be her game

Expanding views, expanding views, expanding views to look at talent instead of skin color as the premise for a role is Sandra Oh's fame

Courting Eddie's Father, Courting Eddie;s Father, courting Eddie's father was not her path

Beating Flower Drum, Beating Flower Drum, Beating Flower Drum, Umeki Miyoshi could only smile sweetly to hide her wrath.

Bumping my, bumping my, bumping my head against a glass ceiling in the sky

Breaking through, breaking through, breaking through is only in my mind's eye

Just as I am about to crack the glass and move to their playing field

The ceiling is moved just out of my reach and once again my passage is sealed.

This poem represents the first time I met FM at Project Newspeak:

My head is swirling with thoughts and emotions
Witnessed an event that caused an internal commotion

Me and my girls went to LA,
Driving down the freeway,
iPod on continuous play,
Rhythmic head sway

My soul is bursting with the words that I write
Can my poetry cause what was created in me after hearing these artists perform tonight

Listened to artists one after another,
Proud of my "sons" like a good mother,
Respect for my sisters and brothers
I may not recover

In my everyday life I am confident and the expert
This new world of words and melodies has me unsure and an introvert

Writing promotes the movement,
Performing spreads the groovement,
Listening provides support and encouragement,
There's got to be some improvement

As I have done with everything else in my life
I'll conquer the self doubt demons, an ever-present knife

Grab hold of the fear,
Shed a tear,
Can't always steer,
The reflection in the mirror

After going to Newspeak, sharing my words on a spoken word stage
Is the next destination in my journey to bring the stories out of the cage

My fear is becoming weak,
The words are beginning to leak,
My pen is playing hide and seek,
I think I am a Newspeakfreak!

ts absolutely amazing how I started in education because I love working with kids. Don't get me wrong I still love working with kids and even though its been 17 years since I was a classroom teacher, that connection and relationship with kids is the greatest!!!

So 17 years ago I left the classroom and became a counselor. Loved it and continued to build meaningful relationships with kids, families and the community. I then became a vice principal and then a principal. Yes I did have to open a can of whoop ass sometimes but I always did it with fairness and respect, and with the goal that no matter what the kid did, preserving their dignity was important to me.

My late brother once said, "there are no bad people, only bad processes". I look at kids the same way. There are no bad kids, only bad behaviors. Deal with the behaviors but love the kid.

So then I became a director and now an assistant superintendent. No matter what title I have or how high on the food chain...ooops I mean organization chart I am, my love for kids still remains intact. All kids from all neighborhoods, from all types of families with different kinds of faces in all different shades.

It isn't a title that defines who I am......it is the work I do with others, interactions with my family, and how true I stay to my heart and soul that defines me.

Red tape and bureaucracy are shackles right now for my creativity, forward progress, problem solving and support of others. For whatever reason this is a challenge that is presenting itself to me. It is so confining that I think I want to quit......................

But then I think of the kids and their families. If I don't stay and fight on behalf of them, then who else will?

In writing this, I can see that I must devise new and different ways to escape from the red tape. I must strategize about how to use bureaucracy to my advantage to fight the hypocracy. I must overcome this challenge for the sake of the kids, for our society, and because I really do have to stay true............

Have you been invited to a masquerade party lately
Not the kind where you wear costumes and cover your faces unashamedly
The type of masquerade party where charades are the way of being
Not just a game played during an interlude of their constant agreeing

The masquerades are plentiful and varied with the ability to fool the most sincere
These costumed individuals can form their words and plan their action so you will revere
Not even realizing you have been drawn into their party of perceived power
You begin to believe the party is just for you and that you will get to enter the golden tower

What are some of the various masquerades costumes you are wondering
There are many forms and styles and coverings each of them made for plundering
There is the one call compassion that is worn like a scabbard and a sword
Yet that masquerader won't let a mother off of work to see her child receive an award

And the masquerader called global perspective that claims to be a beacon of hope
Yet the focus is so limiting and narrow that those in his world are actually hanging by a rope
What about the party goers whose mask is to be the champion of equity for all
But the words that are spoken and the tone that is used actually says I want to make you crawl

How about the costume of being a team player and relationship builder
Hiding the facts and lying, excluding and disregarding keeping the teammate a bewilder
Another masquerade that many party goers will adorn is the one called honesty and trust
Yet the mask comes off quickly when their agenda is being threatened and labeled unjust

Have you been invited to this masquerade party lately
Have you been participating in this masquerade party innately
Are you brave enough to take off the costume and mask for good
Or will you be the No. 1 charade player and be a part of their brotherhood

5 to Life

Trapped  by the shackles of a 9 to 5

Wondering if this is what it takes to stay alive

Where did the dreams of your childhood go

What happened to doing the things we know

When did we put down the brush and paint

Forgetting the melodies that made us faint

Has the 9 to 5 caused you to put aside

The pictures, songs and poems deep inside

Do what you need to during your 9 to 5

But keep the creativity churning 5 to Life

Thank you for being a 4C Mentor and Intern!

Bad face posingowin

Mad face frozen

Glad face showin

Sad face knowin

Check, check,  sensationalize  all about it,

A different kind of hip hop is how they spit

Don't flow about gun toting, degrading woman n shit

Not gonna represent something that just don't fit

Ain't nothin you do gonna make them quit

Flash them pearlies until their face is gonna crack

Never let them know, keeping your anger intact

The image they want isn't their mack

Don't want to sell image, just want to sell their track

Ain't nothing you do gonna make them go back

Wipe those tears from their blood shot eyes

Can't let the sadness tear them up inside

Gonna turn that pain into their next verse wise

No one, no time, no blame, no compromise

Ain't nothing gonna make them let go the prize

Bad face posing

Mad face frozen

Glad face showin

Sad face knowin

No one, no time, no blame, no compromise
Ain't nothing gonna make them let go the prize

Bad face posing
Mad face frozen
Glad face showin
Sad face knowin

In addition to be the Excecutive Director for 4C the Power, I am also the Educational Services Director for a minority owned non-organization that provides afterschool support services and  programs to economically disadvantages and academically struggling youth ages 5 to 18.

I have seen so many poorly run afterschool programs that provide little support for youth that when I had a chance to be a part of the organization I am now and really develop quality afterschool tutoring and enrichment programs I jumped at the chance.

We assist students with their homework and then they join various activities and "clubs" to learn about student government, scrapbooking, hip hop dance, animations, science experiments, sports, music, drama, and nutrition.  We communicate with parents on a weekly basis about the progress of their student both academically and social-emotionally.   We have developed an automated texting system that sends a text of the comments teachers write into their weekly student progress reports.

Even though the students are not in academic support the entire time they are in the afterschool program, their participation in these enrichment activities translates to an increased interest in school and an increase in  learning and achievement.    The schools with our afterschool programs have a greater gain in test scores than other schools with similar populations but with afterschool programs operated by other organizations.

Bottomline, we are more interested in students learning, achieving and discovering their personal power and voice  than the bottom line

Sometime when I write or talk about the work we do in the 4C the Power program, it feels as if it is minor when compared to the work of so many other wonderful non-profit organization.  But when I put it into perspective and think about how learning and becoming aware are so integral to forward movement in a community, I realize that the impact of 4C the Power is huge and does really change lives.

I am blessed to do this work which is really not work but a calling.  I thank God everyday for my family, my health, the 4C Interns.  This is a poem I wrote after the first 4C - like event which was the beginning of  the 4C the Power  movement.

Hip Hop or Hip Hope

The stars aligned, the moons converged and it all came together in a little city to the north

No one imagined or believed what energy and passion could be brought forth

It's crazy how a little hip hop show could create such a frenzy and commotion

But it goes to show the depth of their heart and the pureness of their emotion

Their hunger cannot be satisfied with the foods of their homelands as told

They are refugee, one generation, two generation, three generation old

The craving for someone who looks like them to do something that is bigger than them

Drives their need and desire to grab a hold, to relate, to touch, to talk, to make a friend

Amidst the pounding base and driving rhythms, their arms are bouncing up and down

Jumping and screaming trying to be noticed by the hip hop band that came from the south

The impact of this hip hop band is more profound than merely a showcase of talent

It blurred the lines between color, village, poverty, wealth, age, gender, and accent

Their histories may be different but the barriers are all real for each of those screaming

But during that little hip hop show the histories and barriers were united as if they were dreaming

They danced and sang with freedom and abandonment, shouting to the stage about their frustration

"I want to belong, I want to be valued, I want to be seen for who I am, not their interpretation"

Now what do we do, a fire has been kindled and the emotions released by this little hip hop show

They have become stronger and more connected with the so called mainstream and want to know

Why their access is different than everyone else, to love, to laugh, to be on the inside not the outside

What is the commitment to those who discovered their internal fire and now need a guide

Its crazy how a little hip hop show could create such a frenzy and commotion

Can the community come together to kindle the fires and fan the flames in other locations

Do you have what it takes to develop little hip hop shows throughout the community

Was it really a little hip hop show or was it actually a hip hope show that brought about the unity

As I was posting pictures of Japan, I was reminded about a poem I write prior to going.  I wanted to share it .

The Motherland

Issei, Nisei, Sansei is me

Going to Japan for the first time, sublime, mind in a bind

Anticipating, dissipating, gonna be left hanging

In my mind, will they be kind, what will I find

Not one of them, will they condemn, bury the gem

Not here either, they say neither, take a breather

Motherland, Disneyland, Manzanar sand

Traitor, 442nd translator, hate creator

Silent majority, model minority, never the priority

Not belonging fears, belonging means tears, either brings jeers

Won't change me, not gonna plea, try not to disagree

Connect with roots, won't dispute, the past pursuits

Path was laid out, why question about, they chose the route

The reality, the actuality, the duality

Japanese, American, Japanese-American

America goes with me, Japan will pour tea, wash away the debris

Three years ago the idea of 4C the Power was born.  It came about when I was a director in a large urban school district and wanted to get students more connected and engaged with their school and community.  Since this school district has a very large Hmong populations, I decided that the goup Far-East Movement ( http://www.fareastmovement.com)   would be a perfect group to bring to the students.

That began the whole idea of connecting students to arts and entertainment through education.  Today we bring together artists from all over to work with students in a workshop format creating hands-on projects.  These projects are then performed in front of  all the students and artists.  The data collected on students who have participated in one workshop demonstrated an improvement in attendance, grades and graduation rates.

Students who earn a high school diploma have a greater earning potential than without, and postsecondary training is more of a reality once a student has graduated from high school.  This all translates in to building better communities when our youth are  productive members of their community.

On November 6, 2009 we will be holding a 4C the Power workshop for the students of Glen A. Wilson High School in Southern California.  Kaba Modern, Gamblerz Crew, IZ, Vudoo Soul, Seriously, Commoner and Kings, Clara Chung and DJ Nick Fury will be working with these students.
