4C the Power is please to present an Acoustic Holiday Party which is being hosted by the Far*East Movement. Guest performers include AJ Rafael, Vudoo Soul, Lydia Paek, IZ and other special guests. We are so excited to be collecting small school supplies for the children of the Red Scarf Project in China. Nancy Nguyen will be taking the school supplies with her when she travels to China after Christmas!
Please join us for this wonderful night of fellowship, music, gratitude, and giving!
4C the Power is extremely grateful to East Villagers and the EV Thanksgiving Points Challenge. We are the second place winners and will be awarded $1500. There are so many wonderful things that come out of participating in this challenge besides the money award that I wanted to share.
The 4C the Power interns were really responsible for coming together to join East Villagers and spread the word about 4C the Power and how we build communities through working with youth in the Arts. There were 17 interns who basically worked diligently to upload pictures, write stories and blogs, and share their experiences about their work in 4C the Power. This challenge showed me even more how dedicated they are to the mission and vision of 4C the Power.
Another wonderful thing occured and that was meeting and getting to know the East Villager family. All of the organizations and people involved in building communities just like us but in a different way was both inspiring and moving. EV has opened our hearts even more to so many other ways in which we can help.
That brings me to the third awesome thing that happened as a result of the EV challenge. We became more and more in love with the children who wrote blogs which then created a greater connection to the Red Scarf Project. 4C the Power has selected this project along with Autisim to be our secondary focus for 2010. Of course our primary focus is continuing with our free or low cost workshops for youth!
Lastly, the monetary prize will be used to pay for students to attend the 4C the Power workshops for free and to supplement the donated school supplies to be sent to China for the Red Scarf Project children.
Again, we are so grateful to EV and I am so grateful for the the people I have working with me for 4C the Power!
These wonderful students share their experiences of their 4C the Power workshops. Wilson High School was the beneficiary of a benefit event that spanned three days. There workshops for youth and an all day event that provided food, community building and a show. The artist that performed in the show and also lead workshops for students were; The Gamblerz Crew of South Korea, Kaba Modern, Vudoo Soul, IZ, Seriously, Clara Chung, Shinobi Studios, and DJ NIck. Student were able to create projects in dance, bboying/bgirling, rap, spoken word, singing, composition, photography, and DJing. The testimonial from the students tells it all!
Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season and a time for reflection rather than shopping for me. Especially having been introduced to so many worthy organizations we can support here on East Villagers.
When I met with Nancy, and Mr. and Mrs. Chao, the stories they told me about their travels and in particular the Red Scarf Project was both moving and inspirational. At this Thanksgiving dinner, I will be asking that as a family instead of exchanging Christmas gifts, we instead donate to an organzation that can use the donation to save or enhance lives. I honestly don't need anymore clothes, gadgets, or perfume. Actually I don't need anything because I am blessed to have a place warm and safe place to live, food to eat, medical care and so much more.
I am thankful for the many blessings in my life. What are you thankful for this year?
hese are the critical and important questions I ask myself and now want to hear what you think:
Why are double eyelids so desired but double chins are are not?
Why is it my mom will just get done eating one meal and she's already thinking about the next?
Why do I find myself saying to my kids, "use your coconut" and hear my dad in my head when he used to say that to me?
Why is it whenever someone cuts me off on the freeway, I think of my brother who used to go crazy, thus how I learned the word motherf**er at a very young age.
How did my grandmother make me think I was the most special granddaughter in the world yet all the other 17 grandchildren feel they were the special one?Smart old lady!
How did my blind grandfather always manage to chase me down and wiggle my kneecaps and elbows making me laugh and then cry….
What was God thinking when he decided that Asians would turn bright red when they drink alcohol?
Might as well be a walking a neon sign that says use me, lose me, confuse me, incite me, fight me, spite me
That's why it was better to smoke weed. Not that I would know about that…….
Why does everyone with straight hair want curly hair and everyone with curly hair want straight hair?
Why is the talk always about Asian woman with no asses when I see plenty of Asian men without a booty?
Is that why they try to overcompensate with greenback booty or fancy car booty?
I don't even want to think about what's holding up some you guy's pants right now
Is it really necessary that I have a purse that costs as much as it would to feed an entire village in the mountains ofThailandfor a year?
Why is it that for a long as I can remember people stare at me wondering who I am when I walk into any kind of Asian event?Obon, Chinese New Year, Hmong festival…whatever ……
Are these occasions to celebrate the different cultures or to cash in.I mean how can there be three different Hmong New Year's day?I can go to an Obon festival beginning in June every weekend for two months.
Well at least at the Hmong festivals I feel like Yao Ming
Why did my dad, a Hawaiian born Japanese, use the term "throw out instead of "throw up"?
Why did whatever my grandfather ate on top of his bowl of rice looks so damn good. He could be eating fish cheeks and some of that natto stuff, licking and smacking and slurping. I try it and I would want to "throw out".
Why is it I have to be the one to teach people how to use chopsticks at a dinner party?
My dad would be laughing his ass off right now (wait a minute he didn't have one) because he use to hit me in the arm because I couldn't use them the right way
Why do people always come to me with their problems?
Last time I looked, my business card does not say, Confucius, Buddha or Yoda after my name
Why does my mom or grandma's home have a distinct smell? Not good or bad just a very nostalgic and comforting smell
No potpourri or scented candles burning, just the smell offish, shoyu, sake, ginger, garlic, chloroxand a dash of incense.
Don't you think Asian geeks are the best?
I married one, he even wore a calculator on his belt the first time I saw him. There we were in the student union,I didn't know if he would understand me if I said something to him because he surely wasn'tborn in the US wearing the TI 55 strapped to his belt which was holding up his pants because….. of course……… he has no ass
Why are we indignant about another ethnicity or culture thinking they are better than us, yet within the Asian community that same thinking is going on?Koreans people are this Chinese are that, Japanese people have this, Vietnamese have that.
If some of my questions are some of your questions and some my answers are some of your answers, then that's the commonality we build upon so that we have the courage and love in hearts to accept and celebrate our differences.
Bumping her, bumping her, bumping her head against a glass ceiling in the sky Breaking through, breaking through, breaking through trying to undo the image of a Karate kicking angel and Lucy Liu
Shimmering ice, shimmering ice, shimmering ice and sacrifice in order to win the gold
Through the hoop, through the hoop, through the hoop she jumped but where are the endorsements Kristy Yamaguchi should recoup
Laughing hard, laughing hard, laughing hard when she portrays her mom while making funny faces
Mainstream elusive, mainstream elusive, mainstream elusive to her so how does Margaret Cho gain access to the entertainment club exclusive
Swinging driver, swinging driver, swinging driver of a prodigy scorned because she was not the norm
Confidence broken, confidence broken, confidence broken can Michelle Wie overcome the barriers unspoken
Stereotyping her, stereotyping her, stereotyping her will not be her game
Expanding views, expanding views, expanding views to look at talent instead of skin color as the premise for a role is Sandra Oh's fame
Courting Eddie's Father, Courting Eddie;s Father, courting Eddie's father was not her path
Beating Flower Drum, Beating Flower Drum, Beating Flower Drum, Umeki Miyoshi could only smile sweetly to hide her wrath.
Bumping my, bumping my, bumping my head against a glass ceiling in the sky
Breaking through, breaking through, breaking through is only in my mind's eye
Just as I am about to crack the glass and move to their playing field
The ceiling is moved just out of my reach and once again my passage is sealed.
ts absolutely amazing how I started in education because I love working with kids. Don't get me wrong I still love working with kids and even though its been 17 years since I was a classroom teacher, that connection and relationship with kids is the greatest!!!
So 17 years ago I left the classroom and became a counselor. Loved it and continued to build meaningful relationships with kids, families and the community. I then became a vice principal and then a principal. Yes I did have to open a can of whoop ass sometimes but I always did it with fairness and respect, and with the goal that no matter what the kid did, preserving their dignity was important to me.
My late brother once said, "there are no bad people, only bad processes". I look at kids the same way. There are no bad kids, only bad behaviors. Deal with the behaviors but love the kid.
So then I became a director and now an assistant superintendent. No matter what title I have or how high on the food chain...ooops I mean organization chart I am, my love for kids still remains intact. All kids from all neighborhoods, from all types of families with different kinds of faces in all different shades.
It isn't a title that defines who I am......it is the work I do with others, interactions with my family, and how true I stay to my heart and soul that defines me.
Red tape and bureaucracy are shackles right now for my creativity, forward progress, problem solving and support of others. For whatever reason this is a challenge that is presenting itself to me. It is so confining that I think I want to quit......................
But then I think of the kids and their families. If I don't stay and fight on behalf of them, then who else will?
In writing this, I can see that I must devise new and different ways to escape from the red tape. I must strategize about how to use bureaucracy to my advantage to fight the hypocracy. I must overcome this challenge for the sake of the kids, for our society, and because I really do have to stay true............
In addition to be the Excecutive Director for 4C the Power, I am also the Educational Services Director for a minority owned non-organization that provides afterschool support services and programs to economically disadvantages and academically struggling youth ages 5 to 18.
I have seen so many poorly run afterschool programs that provide little support for youth that when I had a chance to be a part of the organization I am now and really develop quality afterschool tutoring and enrichment programs I jumped at the chance.
We assist students with their homework and then they join various activities and "clubs" to learn about student government, scrapbooking, hip hop dance, animations, science experiments, sports, music, drama, and nutrition. We communicate with parents on a weekly basis about the progress of their student both academically and social-emotionally. We have developed an automated texting system that sends a text of the comments teachers write into their weekly student progress reports.
Even though the students are not in academic support the entire time they are in the afterschool program, their participation in these enrichment activities translates to an increased interest in school and an increase in learning and achievement. The schools with our afterschool programs have a greater gain in test scores than other schools with similar populations but with afterschool programs operated by other organizations.
Bottomline, we are more interested in students learning, achieving and discovering their personal power and voice than the bottom line
Sometime when I write or talk about the work we do in the 4C the Power program, it feels as if it is minor when compared to the work of so many other wonderful non-profit organization. But when I put it into perspective and think about how learning and becoming aware are so integral to forward movement in a community, I realize that the impact of 4C the Power is huge and does really change lives.

When I look at this list of activities, the artist mentors involved, and number of youth who were positively affected by their participation in a 4C the Power workshop or coming to an event we supported, our organization has defintiely changed lives! Thousands of youth were directly affected by 4C the Power and its goal to connect youth to professional artists and make it possible for them to embrace their culture, embrace their creativity, embrace confidence and most importantly EMBRACE THE POSSIBILITIES that they deserve.
I am blessed to do this work which is really not work but a calling. I thank God everyday for my family, my health, the 4C Interns. Far- East Movement and the artists that are a part of 4C. If you see a 4C the Power event in your city, school or organization, please come talk to us and join us in the MOVEMENT!

Three years ago the idea of 4C the Power was born. It came about when I was a director in a large urban school district and wanted to get students more connected and engaged with their school and community. Since this school district has a very large Hmong populations, I decided that the goup Far-East Movement ( http://www.fareastmovement.com) would be a perfect group to bring to the students.
That began the whole idea of connecting students to arts and entertainment through education. Today we bring together artists from all over to work with students in a workshop format creating hands-on projects. These projects are then performed in front of all the students and artists. The data collected on students who have participated in one workshop demonstrated an improvement in attendance, grades and graduation rates.
Students who earn a high school diploma have a greater earning potential than without, and postsecondary training is more of a reality once a student has graduated from high school. This all translates in to building better communities when our youth are productive members of their community.
On November 6, 2009 we will be holding a 4C the Power workshop for the students of Glen A. Wilson High School in Southern California. Kaba Modern, Gamblerz Crew, IZ, Vudoo Soul, Seriously, Commoner and Kings, Clara Chung and DJ Nick Fury will be working with these students.
