Leilei is a beautiful 3 year-old boy who has a unique blue eye and a tragic story. In 2007, his grandfather was killed in a traffic accident on his way to borrow some money for Leilei’s parents’ wedding. The ceremony continued as scheduled, but Leilei’s grandmother, in her late 40’s then, could no longer stay in the family and quickly remarried—very uncommon for simple villagers. Leilei’s parents started their life together taking a loan of 170,000 RMB and working in freelance delivery. Sadly, in 2009 when Leilei was one year old, his father was killed instantly in a traffic accident, leaving behind a broken family and 150,000RMB in debts. To protect his brother’s blood line, Leilei’s uncle, a 23 year-old migrant-worker, came home to look after the young widow and her baby, work in the field and pay off debts. Today, Leilei calls his uncle, “Dad.”

During Lanzhou General Hospital’s rural medical outreach this month, Leilei was found to have congenital heart disease. He was referred to Little Red Scarf and is now in hospital ready for treatment. Although the road to complete recovery is long, we look forward to helping Leilei and his family find the happy ending they deserve.
