Did you know that one child dies from starvation every 5 seconds?

In March, a group called VAY (got the idea from World Vision) got together and hosted an event called the 30 Hour Famine.  We had to raise money for starving children, such as Indonesia and Africa.  We also had to starve for 30 hours.  It was a life changing experience.

First, my friend and I went door to door collecting money. It was hard work, considering many houses having the "No Soliciting" sign.  At the actual event, we starved for 30 hours.  We did many activities.  One of the activities was going to the food/clothes bank.

At the food bank, we helped fold clothes and sorted them out.  It was amazing to find out how many new, usable clothes people were throwing out!  Another activity that we did was "try to get the cleanest water in 30 minutes."

Sounds easy right? Actually... not really.  We only had a couple things, some rocks (so that when the dirty water passes through, the dirt clings onto the rock), a coffee filter, a soda bottle, and DIRTY WATER.  So we used a 2 liter soda bottle and cut the top part off and put a coffee filter in the soda opening.  We put big rocks in the bottle and poured in the dirty water.  It took 5 minutes just to get a small puddle of semi-clean water.  In the end, the dirty water just got a tiny bit cleaner.

All in all, this event helped me learn that there are many people in the world that do not have the food that we have.  I would like to join this event again next year at my church.
