The New Year has arrived. It feels much better than 2009 and no question 2008. We are not out of the mud yet, but people are starting to exhibit some optimism.
Why not have a party to get it started right?
As usual my answer to everything is to have a party. If for no other reason we can catch up with everyone and see what their outlook is for the year.
Last year the gods smiled on us weather-wise and we had a break in the rain the day of the party at my house. This year let us not give them any temptation to ruin the event. We are going to hold the annual event at an indoor location, South First Billiards. In years past we have used the billiards club and it works out great. Unlike my place you won’t have to walk a mile from the county road. It is easy to get to from most of the South Bay; there are several parking lots within a block of the facility.
The activities will include pool and several other games. There are plenty of places to sit and talk. I think you will enjoy.
This year we are going to ask for some help from those that attend to raise some money for after school activities at W.C. Overfelt High School in the eastside of San Jose. Overfelt is a local high school in a poorer neighborhood. While all public schools are challenged by budget cuts in California, Overfelt has been harder hit than most.
Overfelt, in many ways, represents the best of the American dream to me. Many students are first generation Americans whose parents are generally not working at higher paid professions. These parents are probably the hardest by the “Great Recession”.
Like all parents they want the best for their children. A key component of pulling yourself up is education, not only academics in the classroom but also outside in after school activities in the Arts and Sports. This is especially true in sports or band where the results are better when you can act as a team.
Even the $25 ASB card, necessary for after school activities, is a hardship for these students and prevents many students from participating.
The doors will open at 6PM. We will be asking for a $25 dollar donation at the door for the W.C. Overfelt Booster Club.
Games and activities are available to everyone and we hope to get some dancing. There is food and drink for all.
The first of two bands will start playing at 7.
At 8:15 PM there will be a silent auction. We will provide a list of items as donations are collected. Already we have some nice sports memorabilia, award winning wine and vacation opportunities.
At 8:45 the second band will perform until we close up at 10:30PM.
Through the generosity of corporate sponsors the facility is paid for. This ensures that all donations will go directly to the W.C Overfelt Booster Club.
Companies already committed to help are Vista Ventures LLC, Tela Innovations Inc., Denali Software, Inc., AutoESL Design Technologies Inc., Sonics Inc., Altos Design Automation, Accelicon Technologies Inc., Jasper Design Automation, Atrenta Inc., Gauda Inc., Mukti Properties LLC., Donald L. Lucas and James H. Hogan LLC.
If you cannot attend and still want to make a donation please mail a Check to WCO Booster Club, Post Office Box # 321057, Los Gatos, California. 95032.
Please join WCO Booster Club, my family and friends at the party February 4th, 2010.
