International Rescue Committee Mandarin Translation Volunteer Opportunity
Created: 3 year(s) ago
Would you like rewarding, real-life experience helping people in need with your Mandarin skills? Are you interested in helping recent immigrants overcome the language barrier their first few months in the U.S?
The IRC San Jose is a leading non-profit, refugee resettlement agency. It offers low-cost immigration legal services to Santa Clara County, focusing on refugees and asylees. After conducting a summer outreach program to the Chinese Immigrant and Asylee Community in the Bay Area, the first Mandarin-speaking clients are starting to come in. We are currently compiling a database of on-call Mandarin translators who will be willing to come in to the IRC San Jose office for 1-2 hours when needed and translate for a client. Cases will be regarding legal immigration issues, e.g. green card, applying for citizenship, etc. No previous translation or legal experience necessary, though Intermediate and Advanced level Mandarin speakers are preferred. We will provide a list of common immigration legal vocabulary terms and some translator guidelines beforehand. Translation hours are flexible and dependent on your availability, most likely only once every couple of months. If you would like to be added to the Mandarin Translator volunteer database, please contact Tiffany Lin at tiffany.lin@theirc.org. Thank you for your time!
