CJ Huang Teaching Fellowships
Created: 2 year(s) ago
"As far as teaching experiences go, a year of teaching in Hunan Province is a truly unique one, and one that will enrich you more than you can imagine. As a CJ Huang Teaching Fellow, I not only had the chance to experience a side of China that most people never get to see, I also had the privilege of getting to know some students whose kindness, thoughtfulness and compassion astounded me. Living on campus, I really felt like a vital part of the school community, and I formed lasting relationships while learning a lot about culture and language. The service project aspect of the program is particularly special, because it's a chance to personalize the volunteer experience and take responsibility for a project, start to finish. It's a fascinating and eye-opening experience."
Shannon Davidson, CJ Huang Fellow 2006-2007 Jointly offered by VIA (www.viaprograms.org) and the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University, the CJ Huang Fellowship gives two Stanford graduates each year the opportunity to immerse themselves in a semi-rural area of Hunan Province - one which is becoming more unique as China's modernization continues to unfold. This is a great opportunity for fellows to live and teach in an area of China that most foreigners never get to see firsthand. Among other things, fellows gain an astute understanding of rural China, rural education in China, and China's youth. Highlights include: 3 hours of private Chinese language tutoring each week throughout the year $1000 to carry out service projects to benefit the local community 4 weeks of comprehensive training before arrival: TESL, cross-cultural/China specific training and Chinese language instruction In-country and home office support throughout the year The fellowship also covers round trip airfare, the $2400 program fee, insurance, housing, a monthly living stipend, a $1000 readjustment allowance...and more! Applications are due February 4, 2010.
