tonight

feel alright

fly a kite

at night

it's not right?

it's real tight

don't bite

or go out of my sight

cuz i might

feel too light

standing too upright

the lights too bright

please understand my plight

as i fade to white

frustrating it is quite

but i'll continue to fight

to fly to a new height

'aight?

hahahahaha oh no!

back to work now....

12. What are the next steps for the Team HBV Conference?
-house the conference at a different chapter every year?
-maybe too much to have every year (every other?)
-more discussion time next conference
-time to discuss challenges + troubleshoot
-less workshops to allow for more time to process all info
-breaks could be used for discussion
-implement all the things you learned
    -models presented by other chapters/organizations
-longer conference w/ events more spread out/ more time to get to know one another
    -summer?
-8 hour program could be spread out over 3 days
-fair on one day
-have chapters set up booths to allow for people to learn more about other projects
    -efficient
-regional meetings
    -socal/norcal
-one day hep b project integrated into conference
-incorporation of more focus on African Americans?
    -broaden scope
    -immigrant pop.?
        -emerging risk populations
-difficult bcuz there isn’t enough data, but something we should definitely look into
        -congregating patterns/ cohesive communities
-have students stay w/ students/ local Team HBV members rather than hotel.

13. How do you ensure that volunteer base is trained + understand what the real issue is:
-dedicate someone to training volunteers
-utilize ALC resources as training material
-brochures
-p-guide
-website
-system
    -get ppl interested (recruitment coordinator)
    -train volunteers properly (training coordinator)

8. One big Team HBV collaborative project that would involve all collegiate chapters

9. Qinghai project – evaluation
-what’s the aftermath?
-paper in progress (field action report)
-Go, Jonny, Go! (You can do it!)
-paper = evidence of what you have done
-which is why standardized survey data – important (super)
-increases ability to do cool stats
-evaluation should ensure that knowledge levels have increased w/in target population
-evaluation = extremely important
-make sure that efforts are effective and are making an impact
-follow-up survey can fulfill this purpose
-standardized surveys – long + short version recommended for U.S. chapters
-can develop an appropriate tool for China chapters
-ALC wil deal with IRB approval of survey (institutional review board)

10. Collaborative project for World Hepatitis Day?
-movie
-performance art
-photo montage
-documentaries
-viral phenomena
-focus on unique aspects of each location, but show unity by using LIVERight/Team HBV shirts
    -utilize world organizations
-if using performance art, plan and schedule performances for when these world organizations are convening
-you can reach more people – people w/ influence

11. What, When + Who? - keep these in mind whenever you're organizing outreach

1. statistics – how do you get these?
-local public health reports
-can’t do anything without data
-data is good for your personal knowledge but also for those who want to learn from you
-students perceived sometimes as “less knowledgeable”
    -ALC can help
-published reports are valid + reputable (use it)
-know your audience well
-know which data is most approp. For your target
-for example, funding may req/ certain types of stats or data

2. replicate “performance art” outreach in U.S.
-performance art not reliant upon how many people you have
-need something striking
-quality vs. quantity of impact

3. Jade Ribbon Dance was awesome

4. reminder: contact info is in the conference program – use your peers as resources/info.
-presentations also available
-USTREAM site has all of the videos

5. JRYC was able to work with local gov. to recognize World Hepatitis Day
-easily replicable
-engage local community
-advice from the JRYC alumni:
    -persistence
-do not be discourage if city council members do not respond immediately
-start early: e-mail, telephone, meet in person
-contacted mayor + assistant
-make letters specific + relevant to local region
-it became a big media event → publicity

6. Use internet as a means to get people involved worldwide
-donate a hug or a thought about hep B → awareness
- could we do this for Team HBV site?
-3 for life around the world
    -where do you LIVERight?
-photo contest w/ people = good idea
        -Google map integration worldwide

7. Volunteer teams w/ up to 100 ppl
-evaluation of medical school
-influence more ppl through this community
-good relationships w/ schools around campus
-collaboration w/ other chapters
-keep up contacts w/ international + domestic chapters
-international service project = difficult
-rules + regulations can be cleared up w/ help of Chinese chapters
-US + China chapters collaboration in future → sustainable relationship → easier process
    -reach out to Alena
-ALC has a lot of relationships est. w/in China

I must note how impressed I am by Team HBV's growth over these past years. Although we have a long way to go and must not be complacent, we nonetheless have a lot to be proud of.

When I first joined the Jade Ribbon Youth Council as a junior in highschool (in 2006 I believe), I remember the ALC was located in a tiny, one room office. We were mostly focused on HBV awareness in the bay area and Team HBV collegiate chapters were just beginning to appear.

But since then, the JRYC gained greater publicity and established an annual HBV and Liver Cancer Awareness week which was adopted by more cities in the bay area with each subsequent year. The ALC moved into a new office and our events grew more diverse and unique. HepB Free was established in San Francisco and was acknowledged and supported by politicians including Nanci Pelosi, and recently it has spread to and been implemented in San Mateo's HepB Free program. YLC matured and garnered great participation and popularity as well, becoming more theme oriented and organized. The HepB moms project bloomed and a new, wonderfully designed website was launched, complete with public service announcements and a new documentary for mothers and their children. The ALC also began corporate outreaches for corporations such as Cisco Systems and IBM and is currently working on outreach for their Chinese affiliates. The Jade Ribbon Campaign spread to China and sunshine volunteers joined the ranks of the Team HBV chapters that appeared across the U.S. And now, here we are, listening to each other's ideas and stories about past and future events at the inaugural Team HBV conference.

I am very excited for the future, but I am also proud of all that the ALC and Team HBV has accomplished so far.

Right now I am listening to Chrissy's presentation on grant writing. This is important for me as I need to apply for the Stanford Fund for this winter quarter in order to gain some funds to support our budding Team HBV at Stanford. Luckily, Joy, Jen, Liz, Tini, and Tim have experience and have been able to obtain funds through grant writing. I will need to ask them for some guidance this next week.

Currently, I am working on an application for the Stanford Fund. Our branch mainly needs funding for our HBV awareness week and campus screening in the spring. I think that we should be able to obtain the funds. To earn these funds, we will need to volunteer an hour of our time for every $40. I don't mind writing letters, but we may need to write many, many letters to earn the funds we need to run our event.

Unfortunately, projects are often costly. :[

ah well, such is the nature of the beast.

the 100 haikus for my jaded friends have gone elsewhere.

please do not reproduce or use any of my haikus without first contacting me and getting my permission as it took great time and effort to write them and they are near and dear to me.

do not plagiarize, or steal intellectual property as it's just not cool and it would make me, personally, very sad.

Thank you for your understanding.

respectfully,

Dylan Kim

she said bye bye my friend, she said hasta luego mi amor, she said sayonara, anyoung, see you next time sweetie.

Yesterday was a good day. I had a great time meeting my fellow team mates, seeing the faces behind each branch of Team HBV. It's easy to get lost in titles: Team HBV Cornell, Team HBV Harvard, etc. but it is so important to recognize that Team HBV is reliant upon the efforts and enthusiasm of each and every member.

The energy present at yesterday's dinner was lovely and I was happy to meet friends new and old. I am excited for this first inaugural conference and I am grateful that my fellow members of Team HBV traveled from all over the United States and China to be here with us today. To any of those members who may be reading this, thank you for coming all the way to Stanford for this conference! I also want to thank Alena, Jen, and Ying Ying for all of their hard work in putting this conference together. They have each committed themselves day in and day out to bringing this conference to fruition and truly, this conference would not be happening without their skills and efforts. They are all boss (that means really cool"... I think). Today, I see that some JRYC and high school members have also come to attend and this makes me very happy. I think that Team HBV is very lucky to have so many talented and dedicated members. When I think about Team HBV and its members, I am confident that together we can eradicate HBV.

Oh yes, and yesterday, the food was also good. :]

-Dylan
