Category: Project Story

The week started off a bit disorgainzed, we all had so much to learn about each other.  The fudan students, study abroad, and the US cultural extange students were broken into 4 groups.  Though we were given the weekend to prepare in advanced for the week of summer program with the migrant kids, there was only so much we were prepared for, for the comming week.  I would describe our first day in the classroom a trial and error kinda of experience that was much humbling.  As a team we learned alot about classroom management, communication with each other, planning ahead at the same time beling flexiable,  the need for patience, and that we are all very much human no matter how much we try to prove this wrong.
Though my chinese speaking skills is limited (my level of chinese is probabally equal to the level of a chinese person out here speaking spanish) i think this is not a barrier for love.  I am touched by the patience the MMK students had towards me.  Whenever i would speak the children would turn to me and with their big eyes staring over at me try to understand what i was saying.  When i would finnish my sentance they would quickly turn to my partner or another translater and ask what i had just said. They may show it in different ways, such as acting out or exceling in their studies..  I realized how much each child desires for our attention and to feel loved.
The emotions expressed by each person differed greatly as we left the school on the closing day.  Some were filled with tears or sadness others were filled with relief that the week was over, and others perhaps still were contemplating and trying to catch up with their feelings of the week.  I hope for each person that issues and experiences that we just took part in this past week will not be forgotten or taken lightly.  I hope that this opportunity had sparked interest in many to carry on building relationships with people like these children getting involved issues like what was faced this past week.
one week has passed, but we still have a lifetime to make a difference.
