We have been sponsoring a student leadership program at Tsinghua University,Beijing, for several years. 30 outstanding men and women are chosen from everyfreshman class of over 3,000 to participate in programs that aim to developsocial concern and cross-cultural competence in these future leaders of China.Beginning in summer 2007, the Ping & Amy Chao Family Foundation is providingfunding to initiate a new program at Fudan University, Shanghai — the “FudanElite Leadership Program” as named by their Student Affairs Office.Each year, 30 graduating seniors and 15 M.A. students entering doctoral programsare chosen to participate in three successive summer programs:Exchange with American students to develop cross-cultural competenceCommunity service and ethnographic research on poverty in rural ChinaCommunity service in rural ChinaStudy tour to Hong Kong to learn about education, business, government,and non-profit sectors of this international city Tour of Hong Kong’s High CourtIn summer 2007, these programs were simultaneously launched for three cohortsof Fudan students. The feedback was very positive based on surveys and writtenreports from the students.
