Description

The "Hep B Project" educates, screens, and vaccinates at-risk Asian and Pacific Islander populations in Alameda County, CA in order to fight "the greatest health disparity that exists between APIs and the general US population": Hepatitis B. This vaccine-preventable virus accounts for 80% of the world's burden of liver cancer (HCC).

Founded in January 2009, the student-powered Hep B Project aims to:
1) educate Alameda County API populations about Hepatitis B and liver cancer,
2) screen and vaccinate for Hepatitis B with the support of health professionals and free clinics, and
3) establish a relationship between the API community and existing health services within the county.

Cal is unique in that we have 3 different student groups dedicated to Hepatitis B awareness and prevention! Team HBV at Berkeley, SF Hep B Free, and the Hep B Project! This is maybe a start to uniting our groups and hope that we work more together in the future on our campus and in our community!

I know I've been at UC Berkeley for 2 months already, but still -- I can't get over how much hepatitis B and general health activism there is here!  At Cornell, we were "that hep B group."  Cornell Team HBV was not only the only hepatitis B activist group, but the only Asian ...
