Every year many people all around the world do volunteer work. Volunteer work is when you do something that is not required of you and you’re not getting paid for it, you just want to do it. There are many different ways that you can do community service work. The volunteer work I do is at my church. I also do volunteer work sometimes when I help with doing workshops for younger girls about Girl Scout cookies. The other type of volunteer work I do for Girl Scouts is I am a program aide at a Girl Scout day camp. Another thing I also do is gather materials for countries that are in need. Sometimes over the summer or on days that I have off school I sometimes go into the child care center that my aunt works at.

            I do a couple of different things at my church as far as volunteer work goes. One of the things that I do at my church is volunteer in the four year old classroom. When I’m in the room I help get snack ready, help teach the bible lesson, take the kids to the bathroom when they have to go, and sometimes I even help out with some of the other teachers while I’m also taking care of my room. However, before we go to our classrooms we all do a bible lesson as a group and we sing songs and then we go to our classes. Usually whenever I am helping out we have anywhere from six to twelve kids. Another thing I do at my church is volunteer on Wednesday nights. On Wednesday nights I assist the Pastor for the kids with the three year olds thru fifth grade. There I take the kids to the bathroom and the pastor puts me in charge of the preschool kids. I also help teach the bible lessons on Wednesday nights. At my church I also help with when they have special events like their Hallelujah party, Heart party, Happy Birthday Jesus party, and their party they have for Easter. The last basic thing that I do is baby sit whenever they need an extra hand. Different times at my church I would also do puppets for the kids. At my church I also help with the musicals that the kids perform at the church. For the musicals I help backstage, get them into their costumes, help them learn their motions, and then on stage with them.

            Another volunteer job that I do is I help with workshops for younger girls that are in Girl Scouts. The workshops help get them ready to sell the fall nut products and then the Girl Scout Cookies. At the workshops I go over some of the prizes that they may earn through selling these things. I also might play some different games with them that involve the stuff that they are getting ready to sell. Sometimes when I go to these workshops I will end up leading a lesson or going over some of the safety rules needed when they sell the items. Another thing I do at these workshops is I lead them in different songs. Not all of the workshops that I attend have to deal with cookies and nuts though, some of them also deal with people helping others, a workshop called “Zink the Zebra”, and one is about getting ready for Girl Scout day Camp. Zink the Zebra is about teaching the girls that everyone is different on the inside.

            I also am a program aide for Girl Scout Day camps. A program aide is someone who walks all throughout the camp and does different activities with the girls. Another thing a program aide does is we check to see if any of the units need help doing anything. Sometimes if we don’t have anything to do we go find the directors and see if they need help with anything. At the end of the day we sing songs with them and ask them what they did today.

            One of the other volunteer things that I do involves my family and myself collecting different items and then giving them to the countries that are in need. The most recent one that we did was we collected different items that were needed for people in Haiti. When we collected these items we actually ended up with a bunch of them. The fun part about doing this was when we were done collecting these we got to go to a church to help bag up items that get sent over to Haiti. A few years before we helped Haiti, we also helped out some other countries. However, we don’t only help out other countries; we also help out people in our own neighborhood that are unable to get out to the store and buy the things they need. Sometimes we will also ask some people if they want to donate a box of Girl Scout Cookies to help Haiti or to our soldiers.

            Another type of volunteer work I do is over the summer at my aunt’s child care center. I go in to help my aunt, a couple of times during the summer. When I go in I either help her out or I teach a lesson to her kids. Sometimes when I go into her work I read stories to the kids. Another thing that I do when I go in is help take care of the other kids when one gets sick. I also get the kids snack for them while she goes and gets the milk, juice, or water that they have with their snack.

            In conclusion, I do a lot of volunteer work all over my community. There isn’t just one specific thing to do for it to be considered volunteer work, there are many different things you can do. The types of volunteer work that I do are volunteer at my church, do workshops for girls that are in Girl Scouts wanting to sell either nuts or Girl Scout Cookies, also I am a program aide at Girl Scout day camp, gather things together for different countries that are in need, and volunteer at my aunt’s work during the summer. Also remember that volunteer work is when you will say that you are going to do something even though you are not getting paid and it is not required of you.
