lalalala hello!

Busy weekend. Volunteered at APLC... Went to temple for like the whole day for a special ceremony and then went to research lab at night to finish running experiments...whee i'm exhausted. I feel so old nowadays!!

I remembered I wanted to add something to ENTRY SIX that I wrote in a hurry yesterday about the APLC Hep B testing at Monterey Park. Basically, as you know, even with the three-shot vaccine, some people may still have a chance of having Hep B!! This is because they might have been born with Hep B (received vertically via affected mommy) and the doctor may not have tested and treated them within 12 hours. Once the reach teenage years and are required to take the 3-series vaccine, the disease may still be in their bodies so just to be better safe than sorry, get tested! (Unless you were born in CA after around 1990 when CA passed a law mandating every baby to be tested/treated).

Sooooo ever since I found out about that and heard personal stories relating to this, I decided I should get tested too and just confirm that I'm Hep B- FREE. I got my blood drawn yesterday, but right after that, I found out that since I am a regular blood and platelet donor, my blood gets checked everytime so if I had Hep B, I would have known earlier. I thought this was cool so i just wanted to write about it in my lil blog....if you've donated blood, then you are good! :) No harm in still getting tested at a Hep B event I suppose, but at least you have some assurance if you've donated blood.

<3 i always write my blogs kinda late at night or when i'm basically super tired and about to sleep...so sorry if i dont make sense or sound incoherent. My blogs aren't very eloquent haha I'll try harder later...eventually.

As for now, peace out and good night!

Hello hello!!!

The Hep B screening with APLC at Monterey Park was a great success today! :)  From about 9am to 1pm, we screened around 177 people! =D I had a wonderful time speaking in Mandarin...even though my Chinese language skills are pretty limited. Most of the people there were uninsured and low-income. Along with Hep B testing, they were able to also get cholesterol/glucose tests, BMI, dental screening, etc. Almost everyone I helped have heard about Hepatits B, but were under the misconceptions of the methods of transmittance and severity of the disease. It just goes to show how much work we still need to do! A lot of people, however, were previously tested, but never actually got the three shot vaccination.

yuppp fun day! :)

I <3 APLC.

GO TEAM HBV!!!!

Hey!

OMG what a tiring day. I didn't do much really...but I woke up pretty early this morning and made the huge mistake of turning on the TV. Though I was originally going to be completely on time for class/OH, I became late and had to skip breakfast! yep....bfast is veryyyy important! I eat bfast EVERY MORNING....some people skip it and just eat big lunch/dinner but I just realized today that I should always eat bfast! It wasn't until about 4pm that I was able to actually eat so by then, I was just so tired and grumpy. haha

ok so that was my lil side note about the importance of breakfast. =P

Tomorrow (sat 11/21) I'll be volunteering along with many people from my group in Monterey Park! We will be helping the Asian Pacific Liver Center in screening people at a local health fair. The population demographis is mostly Chinese so I need to recall how to say "Hep B" in Mandarin! At the last fair where I had to help translate, I could not, for the life of me, remember how to say "hepatitis B" in Mandarin...i ended up writing the english pronounciation on my hand....that didn't work very well haha...people would come up to me and I would have to look down at my hand...=P

For anyone who doesn't know...Hep B in Mandarin kinda sounds like...."Bi Shin Ga Yen" <--ok maybe I'm a little off....I grew up in a really White neighborhood and I failed Chinese School to go to Dance class. =P

okk i should go sleep now. Gotta get up at 6:30 tomorrow morning!!!

yayyy I <3 health fairs and APLC!!! =D

Hello hello!

Last night officers of the Team HBV at UCLA met for about a little over an hour. We discussed the new manual from ALC (which Alina's older sister worked on!), came up with ideas about how to raise awareness on campus, and watched two reallyyyy sad Thai Health Insurance commercials on YouTUbe. Overall, it was pretty productive and the dedication of the officers shined through as Alana has a midterm today and Victor is taking the GRE on Thursday!!! (GOOD LUCK!) =D

All the ideas for the documentary screening, fundraising, and recruiting new members were so great and innovative! I can't wait for us to really pick up and actually carry out all these great ideas!

yayy i'm so excited. <3

I would write more but I'm in a hurry to leave my apt and get onto campus so I can slave in my research lab some more. haha. The above blog probably has some grammar errors but oh well... =P

Oh! Today, UC Regents are meeting to discuss the 16% fee hike they want to impose on student fees....I think that extra $500 a quarter raise is a bit ridiculous...I'm sure they can get money elsewhere or cut down on certain things in their budget...sigh sigh...I should go join my fellow UCLA ppl and protest outside Covel or camp out tonight by Pauley.

Hello hello!!!

Nothing exciting happened today.

I just randomly remembered in class today that one of our club advisors suggested our students to get tested for Hep B even though they went through all three shots as teenager. Apparently, there is still a chance that you can have Hep B!!! Kinda scary...walking around the really asianified campus...seeing so many faces of people who, like me, thought they were "safe" and probably won't ever get tested unless we spread the word! Of course the chances might be small, but one occurrence = one affected person..then that person has sex and then BOOM! it keeps going....

kk random haha =P

Team HBV at UCLA Officer meeting TMR night! I'm excited to hear all about the different things our Prez found out at the conference! I hope we have food at the meeting...

okie dokie.

that is all.

probably a useless blog...i'm just bored in class  =P

Till tomorrow,

Hugs and high fives,

Michelle!

Greetings Everyone!!

wow! This is exciting! I've never had a blog before!!! TODAY is a day to remember!!

Well today is the first day I actually started going onto East Villagers and exploring all the features. Its pretty fun...a facebook-wannabe but more exciting because people earn points and the points accumulate to a greater change to people's lives! Just IMAGINE what facebook could do for the world!!! With thousands and thousands of members on facebook, everyone supporting a non-profit, then so much good could be done! Maybe facebook will have to increase their ad space to get more money, but I'm sure they probably have enough money haha...the Harvard student who created facebook is a multi-millionaire! =P  (just a random idea to fill up this blog entry hehe)

Anywayyy Team HBV at UCLA had a live stream viewing party today to support the conference! I was not able to go as I was a slave to my research lab for several hours...but I heard it was a lot of fun and I"m still really sad to have missed it! :(

Team HBV is just starting up at UCLA but I see so much potential and I'm so glad to be a part of this wonderful group! All the officers are so outgoing and I can really see us all just becoming the best of friends as we make a difference and raise awareness :)

oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALANA!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

Hugs,

Good night,

Michelle <3
