So as the next quarter (or semester) rolls around, what are your plans for keeping Team HBV going at your schools? Are you going to have another core meeting before the end of this year to plan out more events, or are you just going to stick to your original schedules/plans and take it from there? Just asking for advice as a new chapter- we have everything planned out, but if we should do anything extra over break, like brainstorming and the like, feel free to tell us!

Good sayings are like pearls strung together. - Chinese Proverb

---

I feel like this quote would tie all the other ones together because it explains the power of strong words. Words can move a nation, and we must remember to listen to our wise elders if we are to succeed in life and bring honor to our families! I also feel like a Chinese proverb would be fitting for EV :)

To everyone at East Villagers:

Hope you're having a marvelous Thanksgiving break, and I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving Day!

May you eat lots and lots of turkey (or any adequate turkey-substitutes), and rejoice in the spirit of... CHRISTMAS-IS-COMING-YAYAYAYAY

:)

Much love,

Michelle

So I realized that EV doesn't have a very smooth version of the wall-to-wall, so I made this blog to faciliate discussion with a friend. I'm contemplating making a blog for each friend- that way, we could essentially have consolidated archives of our wall-to-walls with each friend!

Hey Cagla! Thanks for joining EV :D

How's it going?

There hasn't been anything about this, so I might just let everyone know! I joined Joy in meeting with Kristen at the Haas Center, and she was so helpful! The Haas Center has wonderful people who are extremely friendly and peppy and ready to help. We even got a welcome packet explaining what they can help us with. :)

I know that the Haas Center is specific to Stanford, but for those who don't go to Stanford, try teaming up with the service center on campus! If you already have, I'd love to know how they have helped.

I do Spanish, not French. So hopefully "tres" will pass!

I'm also unsure if I'll have time tomorrow to post another quote, so here's to two in a day! Although I'm not sure that the last one counted as a day anyways, since it was so early. Ahhh college procrastination.

Well, here it is:

Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things. - Denis Diderot, 1713-1784

---

So we've established that we need to dream. But what do we do with only dreams? We must infuse passion into the dream as well, if we are to accomplish them. And helping people... that's elevation of the soul to the max. :)

It's now been three days since the conference, and I'm still bubbling over with ideas! I also feel like the conference bonded us together as a team and as Team HBV in general. I still have tons of pictures on my camera that still need uploading!

I do miss everyone, and I wish it were still the weekend! Such a good time. :)

I'm still attempting to write my paper, and in these situations, only one thing is the cure-

Disney songs!!!

And what song is better than our very own, I'll Make a Man Out of You? Seriously. Mulan rocks!

---

Shang:
Let's get down to business--to defeat the Huns.
Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?
You're the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man out of you

Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
You are sure to win
You're a spineless, pale, pathetic lot
And you haven't got a clue
Somehow I'll make a man out of you!

Chien-Po:
I'm never gonna catch my breath

Yao:
Say good-bye to those who knew me

Ling:
Boy I was a fool in school for cutting gym

Mushu:
This guy's got 'em scared to death

Mulan:
Hope he doesn't see right through me

Chien-Po:
Now I really wish that I knew how to swim!

Shang and Chorus:
(To Be a man)
We must be swift as the coursing river
(To Be a man)
With all the force of a great typhoon
(To Be a man)
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon

Time is racing toward us till the Huns arrive
Heed my every order and you might survive
You're unsuited for the rage of war
So pack up, go home, you're through
How could I make a man out of you?

Shang and Chorus:
(To Be a man)
We must be swift as the coursing river
(To Be a man)
With all the force of a great typhoon
(To Be a man)
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon

(To Be a man)
We must be swift as the coursing river
(To Be a man)
With all the force of a great typhoon
(To Be a man)
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon

You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'

George Bernard Shaw

Building upon the inspirational quote of yesterday, this quote furthers the notion that dreams are the first step to success. Just as Jiminy Cricket said about wishing upon a star, if we wish upon a certain jade-colored ribbon, we can achieve anything!

I'd like to make this blog as interactive as possible. I am an only child, and I love company! That being said, what ideas could you share with us, so we can leave our first year at Stanford with a large mark on the community? Also, to my fellow core members, I feel like I don't see you often enough. How are you all doing? Maybe we can discuss our ideas here! I feel like Facebook is getting old, after all.

Is anyone else having issues with becoming addicted to EV? It's almost becoming the new Facebook! Here I am, in the Green Library, with an IHUM paper due tomorrow, and yet, I can't unglue myself from EV! What draws you to this site? Is it the people? The smooth interface? Comment, and let me know!

Many times in life. I feel like we as a human race are too nitpicky about ideas. We dicussed the merit of double-spacing or single-spacing block quotations, and I really feel like such debate hinders social developmet. WIth that time, we could be discussing how to achieve world peace. SIgh.

Those MLA folks.

I have seen many active users on EV, and it's so exciting to see this united online presence. I find it necessary, then, to post some facts about the Jade Ribbon Campaign online, so here is some info, straight from the Asian Liver Center website at liver.stanford.edu!

---

The greatest health disparity between Asian Americans and white Americans is the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infection and the high incidence of liver cancer, 80% of which is caused by chronic hepatitis B infection. One in 10 Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans have chronic hepatitis B infection compared with 1 in 1,000 of Caucasian Americans.

In May 2001, the Asian Liver Center launched the Jade Ribbon Campaign in the San Francisco Bay Area to spread awareness about hepatitis B and liver cancer in the Asian community.

The objective of the campaign is to increase awareness and provide ethnic-sensitive health information to the API community and health professionals in an effort to reduce this major health disparity and improve API health.

Considered to be the essence of heaven and earth, Jade is believed in many Asian cultures to bring good luck and longevity while deflecting negativity. Folded like the Chinese character meaning "person" or "people," the Jade Ribbon symbolizes the united voices of those fighting hepatitis B and liver cancer worldwide. Learn more about the Jade Ribbon Campaign.

We discussed racial profiling in class today, and I now pose the question to you- is it beneficial, or detrimental to society? Poeple were split on the issue, although most sided with the latter. How can we prejudge anyone in this society? I feel like racial profiling would contribute to prejudice as well.

A good point that someone else brought up is that if one has actual security camera footage, then the police can try to find that person through profiling. Others, however, have said that we will create second-class citizens if we profile without information.

What do you think?

Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood...Make big plans, aim high in hope and work. - Daniel H. Burnham, 1846-1912

I think that this quote sums up exactly what Team HBV needs to do at this point. We have just started our new chapter, so what we need to do now is to think big, dream big, and then execute. So far, we have been doing well on this - we used up two white boards at our Sunday night brainstorming session! - and we have a great foundation for our inaugural year.

Keep looking for more quotes from me- I love how inspirational some of these are!

It has been two days since the conference, and what a two days it has been! Team HBV at Stanford had its brainstorming meeting Sunday night (yes, after the conference! So much dedication), and we are set and ready to go for the year! We have our quarter schedules set up and everything. Monday we had a break, and this morning, we met with the Haas Center. We are now affiliated with the service hub at Stanford. Looks like it'll be an exciting year!

The Stanford chapter had another meeting today, and we discussed several things crucial to our organization. We are well on our way in progressing as a new student group on campus! Go Team HBV!
