The high summer has arrived in the blink of an eye and soon the children will send off their intense school life to greet the summer vacation. Meanwhile the Little Red Scarf project of the Love Focus Fund of CCHC has also entered its peak season. For the past few days, the applicants had shown up in an endless stream to ask for open heart surgeries to treat their congenital heart disease. When asked why they did not come earlier but waited until the summer time, the children answered: “It is now the summer vacation. We want the surgeries to take place during the summer when the classes are not in session so we can recover from the surgeries just in time to resume our school work without any interruption.” Looking into the sickly faces of these children, I was overwhelmed with the feeling of tenderness. At that moment, I gratefully realized that poverty and illness would never prevail over the purity of a child’s mind and these children’s aspiration for living and learning would rise above these impediments.

These cases of ill children’s receiving the free treatments demonstrate how the compassion of human beings overpowers the ruthlessness of the illness. It is unfortunate for these twenty-four children (including Ban Wu, Qien-Qien Li, and Yue Li) to have to suffer the illness; however it is very fortunate for them to have received various assistances. Through numerous channels of support such as the Hope Scholarship, these children had attended elementary school without having to pay any tuition. They also had received the open heart surgeries - free of charge, which was made possible by many generous people who donated to the Love Focus Fund of CCHC. Special thanks to those compassionate donors who have brought hope to the living world. I also have high hopes for the children… Wish them a happy and healthy life! May wisdom and diligence bring the children a bright and prosperous future!

Out of the 24 children, Ban Wu, Qien-Qien Li, and Yue Li drew most of my attention. Ban Wu was very shy and seldom talked. She would not leave the hospital after she was discharged and would not reveal the reason for her reluctance to leave. Holding back her tears, she eventually parted from us after she had a chance to bid farewell to Doctor Cao who performed the surgery on her.

Qien-Qien Li is a fourteen- year-old girl whose age is above the age limit of the children receiving the open heart surgeries. We normally do not take children who are older than twelve. We were very moved and shocked by the application letter written by Qien-Qien’s sister who described the extreme hardship and tragedy that the Li family had gone through; therefore, we decided to do our best to help ending the sufferance of Qien-Qien. (Below is a photographic copy of the letter.)

Yue Li is ten years old and attends fifth grade. He wrote his own application letter describing how the poverty and his illness had driven his mother away and all the sacrifices and hardship that his grandmother and father had to endure to raise him. At the end of the letter, Ban stated that if he was given a chance for a new life, he would donate his organs after his death to help others in sickness so he could return the favor he had received from the Love Focus Fund of CCHC. I was in tears before I could finish reading Ban’s letter. This led me to recall the saying of “When the poor people are smiling, they actually feel like to cry.” by the famous Chinese author Shi-Zhi Yu. Below attached are photographic pages of Ban’s letter.

There are still over 20 children who are undergoing treatment and I will cover their situations and progresses in my next report. To this date, the Little Red Scarf Project has given a healthy life to eighty-six children; this accomplishment is mostly attributable to the generosity and compassion of the Ping & Amy Chao Foundation, the Love Focus Fund of CCHC, Dr. Yi-Fei Dong and all his team members at the Lanzhou People’s Liberation Army General Hospital.  We could not have thanked all these caring people enough!

How I wished the children of Gansu Province could have received the heart surgeries for treating their congenital heart disease sooner. The Children's Day set on June 1 should be the happiest festival for every child in the world, especially for those in China. To many kids, the Children’s Day is an important and most celebrated festival, which is outweighed only by the New Year. However, for those children with the medical condition of congenital heart disease and living in the poor rural area of Gansu Province, it is beyond their imagination to deem the Children’s Day as a day for celebration since they cannot even afford to attend school or to have any medical treatments. Amazingly these children, who came to seek medical treatment, managed to rise above the hardship and would never give up the pure idealism of living a normal and happy life. My heart ached whenever I looked into these children’s innocent faces with the helpless expression in their eyes; meanwhile, I could not stop asking myself what we could do for these children in order to end their suffering. We can smell the fragrance of a rose on our hands even after the flower was given away and our hearts felt fully contended when we shared whatever little possession we had with those who were in need. It is a blessing to be able to stretch out a helping hand.

A few days before the Children’s Day on June 1, Doctor Dong had performed successfully various heart surgeries on Jia-Le Li, Xien-Zi Chen, Wen-Li Li, Chia-Li Kao, Ni Xu, Xiao-Gang Kao, Ruen-Bo Shen, Xian-Xia Wang, and Fu-Guo Luou. We were especially delighted to see that the operation on Chia-Li Kao being a great success because she had suffered for a long time from a serious condition of Ttetralogy of Fallot (a congenital heart defect involving four anatomical abnormalities and the most common cause of blue baby syndrome) and the surgery should have been done five years ago. Due to the financial constraint of the Kao family, the very overdue surgery was indefinitely postponed until Ping and Amy Chao stretched out their helping hand. In April of 2009, Ping and Amy visited Chia-Li at her home and offered to pay for all the medical expenses. Because the treatment was delayed for five years, the surgery on Chia-Li was much more difficult and dangerous than the others. However, with the excellent medical skills and expertise in treating the congenital heart disease, Dr. Dong and his assistant had performed a successful surgery on Chia-Li. Under the assiduous care of the ICU nurses, Chia-Li and the other children were discharged before the eve of Children’s Day. Finally these underprivileged children had a reason to celebrate the special day like the other children in the world.

It seems the more we posses, the more depressed we feel when our ability in helping other people in distress is limited. Compassion towards the other human beings is what makes us feel that we are living a full and meaningful life. It can be defined as sympathy or a noble human nature; it is also the landmark of civilization. I am deeply moved by the compassion of Ping and Amy who established the Ping & Amy Chao Foundation, in collaboration with the Love Focus Fund of CCHC, to provide medical treatments for the ill children in the poor rural area of GansuProvince. The foundation has provided these children - part of our next generation and the hope of our future, with the opportunity to live a healthy life just like the other children from the more affluent cities.

Let us pray for a more philanthropic world for our offspring and let love float among all of us!

Tin-Tin Nan, Mao-Mao Shi, Ke-Ke Chen all came from the rural area of Tongwei County of Gansu Province in China. Just like the other children who previously came to seek treatments at Lanzhou People’s Liberation Army General Hospital, these three kids had the medical condition of congenital heart defect (CHD) and would receive surgeries funded by the Love Focus Fund of CCHC, in collaboration with the Ping and Amy Chao Family Foundation. It was noticeable that Mao-Mao Shi was different from the other kids; Mao-Mao, looking barely like a girl, stayed quiet and never cried since her arrival. Some of my co-workers tried to make Mao-Mao laugh so she would feel at ease and would warm up to the nurses who were going to tend her after the surgery; however, Mao-Mao responded with a straight-faced expression with her mouth slightly opened. Only after I explained to my co-workers that Mao-Mao was also a mental-retarded child, my co-workers started to understand why Mao-Mao was not reacting more positively. On April 29, 2009, Doctor Dong performed the surgery on Mao-Mao to close the patent ductus arteriosus and repaired the mitral valve. After the operation, Mao-Mao had recovered very well under the tender loving care of the doctors and the nurses. Mao-Mao would be discharged soon and when we tried to make her laugh, she still only opened her mouth slightly. However, this time I could see the smiling image in the depth of her eyes.
