I started to volunteer at a local senior citizen home by the name of Grace Park two years ago. At Grace Park I learned so much about myself and others that I would have never known. When I first arrived there I was assigned to help out with arts and crafts. Having the opportunity to sit down with those people was something that should be given to everyone. Many people my age would not find helping out at a senior citizen home exciting, but being there you learn so much by just sitting down and talking with them.
While volunteering there I have learned so much about what I should expect in life, lessons that they have learned, and advice for the future. Having the opportunity to get involved in my community allowed me to accomplish so many skills such as patience and listening which I know I will need in the future. Even when there were no arts and crafts or activities, I was able to sit down and talk with the elderly in their rooms and always have someone to talk to.
Grace Park has been just another reason as to why I should stay involved in my community. Through this community service I found that it influenced me to have the need to stay involved in my society. May it be volunteering twice a week at a senior citizen home, or just helping out at a community fund raiser, I plan to continue volunteering. Grace Park has influenced me greatly in participating in my community and I hope to stay involved in both college and as an adult.
